Jan Thiel is a bay on the southeast coast of Curaçao, about fifteen minutes from Willemstad. It has grown into one of the island’s most popular places to stay, and the reason is straightforward: it is the rare spot where a sheltered beach, a row of good restaurants and genuine quiet are all within a few hundred metres of each other.

What makes Jan Thiel popular
Most beach areas on Curaçao force a trade-off. Mambo Beach is lively but busy; the western bays are beautiful but remote; the city has restaurants but no swimming. Jan Thiel is the compromise that happens to work: a calm bay with facilities, restaurants around it, and residential streets behind it where it is quiet by ten in the evening.
Jan Thiel Beach, on foot
The bay is sheltered, the water is shallow at the edge and clear further out, and there are loungers, showers and shade. There is a small entrance fee at the beach clubs. For a first swim, a snorkel or an afternoon with a book, it is as easy as a beach gets on this island.
From Hibiscus Beach House it is a five-minute walk. That sounds like a small detail until you have spent a holiday driving to a beach every morning.
Restaurants and beach clubs nearby
Around the bay there are several beach clubs and restaurants, from lunch with your feet in the sand to a proper dinner by the water. In practice it means you can eat out every evening of a week without arranging transport once — which matters more than you would think on an island with no Uber and taxis at fixed rates.

Quiet, with everything close by
Behind the beach, Jan Thiel is mostly residential: villas, apartments and small-scale accommodation on quiet streets. There is no nightlife strip here. If you want to be out until two in the morning, you will be driving into Willemstad; if you want to hear nothing but the wind in the palms, you are in the right place.
That combination — facilities within walking distance, silence at night — is the single reason most of our guests give for coming back.
A base for exploring the island
Curaçao is small, and Jan Thiel is well placed on it. Rough driving times:
- Willemstad — about 15 minutes
- Hato airport — about 30 to 40 minutes
- Caracas Bay and the Tugboat — a few minutes
- Spanish Water, for boat departures — about 10 minutes
- The western bays — roughly an hour, best as a day trip

Who Jan Thiel suits
