Curaçao is not an island where everything is within walking distance. The most beautiful beaches are spread along the west coast, Willemstad is a short drive away, and supermarkets and restaurants are easiest to reach by car. A rental car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, without depending on taxis or fixed excursion times.
Good to know if you are visiting from abroad: you drive on the right, distances are short, and a valid driver’s licence from your home country is normally all you need. There is no Uber on Curaçao and taxis work with set rates, so if you plan more than a couple of outings, a rental car is usually the practical choice. Popular drives from Jan Thiel include the beaches of Cas Abao, Porto Marie, Playa Lagun and Grote Knip, and of course colourful Willemstad.
