Curaçao is one of the best Caribbean islands for snorkeling straight from the shore. The reef starts close to the beach at many spots, the water is clear year-round, and you do not need a boat or a guide for most of it — just a mask, fins and a free morning. These are the spots we send our own guests to.
The Tugboat (Caracas Bay) — closest to Jan Thiel

Ten minutes from Jan Thiel lies Curaçao’s most famous snorkel site: a small tugboat wreck sitting upright in shallow, clear water near Caracas Bay. It is covered in coral, surrounded by fish and shallow enough for beginners. You can reach it by land or as part of a boat tour that combines it with other stops along the coast.
Playa Lagun — turtles between the cliffs

A narrow bay squeezed between high cliffs on the west coast, and the most reliable place on the island to snorkel with sea turtles. Go early in the morning when the bay is calm and quiet — it is a small beach that fills up by midday.
Grote Knip and Kleine Knip

The two Knip beaches are the postcard of Curaçao: white sand, turquoise water, cliffs to jump from. Kleine Knip is the better of the two for snorkeling, with coral close to shore. Both are free public beaches.
Cas Abao and Porto Marie

Two well-organised beaches on the west coast with sunbeds, facilities and good snorkeling right off the sand. Porto Marie is known for its double reef, Cas Abao for its easy entry and calm water. Both charge a small entrance fee per car — worth it for a full beach day.
Klein Curaçao — the day trip
The uninhabited island of Klein Curaçao is only reachable by boat, and its long white beach and clear water make it the classic full-day trip. Boats leave early in the morning; we can help you book a trip with an operator we trust.
Practical tips
Mornings are calmer and clearer than afternoons. Bring reef-safe sunscreen — the coral will thank you — and water shoes for the rockier entries. Most west-coast beaches are easiest to reach by rental car. And if you want to cover more reef with less effort, ask us about our underwater scooters — we rent them out ourselves.
